Feeling Gray!

Hey Dolls! No, I’m not feeling down. It was simply too easy to title this post “50 Shades of Gray.” Any who, when the seasons change, my fall-back color (no pun intended) is black, with the ever-present perfect shade of Chanel Red Lipstick. I rock black with red lips straight through to Spring. But a funny thing happened this year when I began paying attention to  my cool weather wardrobe. My black is being overtaken by gray – gray pants, gray turtlenecks, gray jackets, gray, you name it. I even find myself attracted to gray on the racks in the boutiques and stores I shop. And, although I have been a creature of habit, I welcome the change to gray.

So what’s new in gray? Here are my fav’s in gray for the season.

smith-cultpp_w300_h152

You have to love this shade, described as an “opaque cement.” Not to mention that the packaging is to die for! (And yep, they call it “nailed” lacquer!)

katvondlogo

Smoke is the newest edition to the Shade + Light Eye Contour Quad Collection. Touted as “color contouring,” these cool matte grays, coupled with a touch of deep taupe, are perfect for a crisp fall evening.

I know, I know! I am taking you out of your comfort zone with this uber-edgy look. But, I promise, it is so chic against the matte eye look above from the Kat Von D Smoke Quad. I purchased, wore it, and have yet to be kicked out of our home by my Mr.

Feeling unsure about all of this darkness? My gift to you – a makeup tutorial by my favorite YouTube beauty blogger, The Fancy Face. No one does it better than Miss Tina. Peep her tutorial below to get the deets on how to rock this look. And be sure to subscribe to  her YouTube Channel! You’ll love her!

Now, what to wear? My go-to staple for the colder weather, a cashmere turtleneck. I am loving this simple deep gray t-neck. Pair it with casual leggings, skinny jeans, or leather leggings with a haute stiletto.

You cannot go wrong with this outerwear number from J. Crew. Truly a show-stopper, the pièce de résistance with any casual outfit!

j-crew-logo

Why not give both of these pieces a little pizzaz with beaded tassel earrings. Also from J. Crew, these beauties are so pretty in “misty fog,” dangling for a sparkly rhinestone!

Finally, we know a Doll can’t go far without a mean shoe, or in this case, boot game. Check out these charcoal thigh highs from Stuart Weitzman. These numbers illicit a full-on swoon!

You see why my mood is gray?! Won’t you join me!

Until then,

Pretty Organized Pt. Deux …

Several weeks ago, I posted about organizing the rooms in your home ~ everything from purging, storage options and filing. Since that time, I’ve come across several super stylish ways to organize your shoes, scarves, jewelry, etc. The fun here is that depending on the design aesthetic in your home, you can add your own flair to these ideas.

For us shoe loving dolls, storing multiple boxes of different sizes can be tiresome. Not to mention combing through and lifting the lids to find the perfect pair to match your outfit. How about storing your shoes in a glass-front armoire/cabinet! I love the idea of purchasing a fabulous piece of furniture for your dressing room to display your highest YSLs or Stubbs and Woottons.

creative-shoe-storage-ideas-1

Jewelry can also be quite cumbersome to store. The challenge, how and where to store “the good stuff” vs costume pieces. Adorning your dressing table with these glass covered silver pedestals and disks filled with your most eye~catching costume jewelry is tres magnifique!

Image: Love Letters to Home

I am also scarf lover. They can be worn in numerous ways on your head; but I have been known to tie them on the handle of my bag to compliment a outfit. Some scarves however are nothing short of a work of art. Why not treat them as such by hang them in your home.

hermes scarf

Image: Hermes

You may also want to consider hanging your scarves on a crystal wall hook. Whatever your choice, just don’t stuff them in the bottom of a drawer.

And, how about those numerous perfume bottles? Open shelving for your bathroom or dressing room keeps them out-of-the-way, yet accessible, making it easy to select your choice for the day or evening.

So you see, storage and organizing doesn’t having to be a sterile and boring endeavor, but more of a true extension of your personal style. I’ll be on the look out for more stylish ways to store your “what-nots” to share with you.

All Hail the Sun Pt. Deux ~ Friday Quick Post Give Away!

Essie

Whether you’re into pastels, neons, Minx or you’re traditionalist who favors nudes or a French Manicure, manis and pedis are a must during the warmer months. (Actually, they are a must all year around! Don’t let anyone tell you different.)

However, like our skin, the sun can also take its toll on our polish. Several years ago, I noticed that my polish would “yellow” during the summer months, turning a perfectly pretty manicure unsightly. But, a trip to the local “beauty bar” and I found the perfect remedy ~ Essie Non-Yellowing Top Coat. This little bottle is a life saver! One coat and your polish will maintain its color for life your manicure.

So, in celebration of fabulously-trendy manicures and pedicures this summer, today’s “Friday Quick Post” is a contest! The first three dolls who sign-up to follow “Pretty Domestic” via email will receive a bottle of Essie Non-Yellowing Top Coat. The contest doesn’t begin until 5:00 EST today, May 18th. NOTE: To follow, you have to confirm that you wish to receive posts from “Pretty Domestic” by clicking on the link you will receive in your email inbox.

All Hail the Sun!

I’m a product of the slather on the baby oil and lay out in the sun for hour’s era. I shudder to think of it. But in the words of Ms. Angelou, “When you know better, you do better.” May is Melanoma Month, so what better time to remind ourselves of the importance of protecting our skin against the sun as we approach the summer months. The options for practicing “safe sun” are endless. Here is a list of skin care products to ensure you are well-protected during the summer months, but more importantly, healthy afterwards.

Peter Thomas Roth Sunscreen in a Brush. This super cool, mineral-based powder protects you from the sun, while also fighting against the aging process. Small in size, it will fit perfectly into your summer tote or beach bag.

Sunscreen in a Brush

Tocca Stella SPF 30+ Sunscreen Towelette. I love these! Not only do they protect you from harmful UV Rays, not only are they so compact that you can carry them in the smallest clutch, but they are also scented in Tocca’s classic scent ~ Italian Blood Orange! Bella!

tocca stella

Soleil Organique. This 100% natural sunscreen is made for you more eco-friendly dolls, and is available in both face and body formulas.

EcoFriendly Sunscreen_Instyle

Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pads. If you’re not in to tanning at all, this exfoliator also gives you a little color ~ “glow” ~ upon application. I recommend trying one of the pads on your inner wrist first, which tends to be the same color as your face. You want to make sure you are comfortable with the results.

Beautiful, well-protected skin gives the option of forgoing makeup or playing with beachy, bronzy summer color palettes. Love this Beach Lover Set by NARS with gold, copper and peach hues. NARS Beach Lover_Sephora Two of my FAVORITE all-time “go-to” products for the summer are NARS Body Glow and Michael Kors Leg Shine. A little of each on your legs, arms, and chest and you’ll radiate sun goddess!

nars body glow leg shine Finally, summer wouldn’t be summer without the appropriate sunglasses. I tend to favor the classic Ray-Ban Aviator. No one rocks them better than my Daddy and Brother; but I love them too with my hair slicked back in to a neat ponytail.dj and daddy

And for a more dramatic look, I always reach for a classic Jackie O. inspired larger frame.

Pretty Organized

For years, my family and friends have commented on my need for organization. I literally become paralyzed if my home and office are not completely organized ~ everything has a place. I laughingly remember the story of my BFF, Allyson, asking me to come and organize the closets in her newly purchased home. While she unpacked boxes in other rooms, I joyously organized her clothes by style, color, season and so on. At the completion of my task, I beamed with pride at my work. Allyson, on the other hand, was completely overwhelmed by the sense of order. While she absolutely appreciated my time and effort, “It’s just too much,” she laughed. I’ve since come to realize that organization and order are relative to the person and their lifestyle.

Girlfriends that know me well (not Allyson ~ smile) often comment that they would love for me to visit their homes and help them get organized; that I should also consider turning this into some type of business. I’m not there yet, but who knows. In the meantime, I thought that I would share some organizing tips that I have come to swear by.

Start small. Don’t try to tackle every room in your home in one day, or one week. Whether a closet, dresser, medicine cabinet, or linen closet decide on what needs the most attention and begin there. This year, one of my New Year’s resolutions was to tackle a room a weekend. I organized one room each weekend, and voila, I finished in short order, without feeling overwhelmed.

Purging is key. My general rule is that if I haven’t used or looked at it in six months, I throw it away. This includes unnecessary paperwork, bills, and old make up. Of course, there are certain caveats to this ~ off-season clothes in storage , unexpired medicine, etc. ~ other than these items, get rid of it. [Note: I’ll post about closet organizing very soon.]

Everything has a place. Storage options are endless these days. Some functional, some fashionable, but yes, everything has a place. In my bathroom for example, I use storage baskets with handles to organize my numerous creams, potions, and lotions. Try using baskets to organize by the following categories: (1) Skin care products; (2) Nail polish, remover, files, etc.; (3) Vitamins; and (4) Hair products, accessories and styling tools.

With stores like TJMaxx and Home Goods, purchasing baskets is an inexpensive endeavor. These resemble what I use in my bathroom; but don’t forget about your own sense of aesthetics. Select baskets that reflect your personal style. I chose brown baskets to pick up the colors in my bathroom. (Even though no one sees them once I close my bathroom closet door.)

Storage Baskets

Baskets can also be used for other areas of you home. I keep a basket by my bed for all of my magazines. Instead of them piling up on the floor and sliding all over the place, they are neatly stacked and out-of-the-way.

But what about the mounds of paper that we accumulate and are unable to throw out ~ appliance warranties, user manuals, large purchase receipts, etc.? When I purchased my home one of the best gifts I received was the Home Improvement Guide and Document Organizer. Barnes & Noble describes it as two products in one, and it is! The first part of the guide contains over 100 pages of home improvement information, but it’s the second part that counts. It’s an accordion file that allows you to store all of those documents that tend to get stuffed in a drawer somewhere. The sections include paint, flooring, windows and doors, cabinetry and hard surfaces, tubs, toilets and sinks, lighting and lamps, appliances, electronics, exteriors, and miscellaneous. I use this to store receipts, manuals and warranties anytime I purchase a new appliance or pay for work performed in my home.

Home Improvement Filing System

Now there are times that call more stylish storage; for example where you keep your keys and mail, “inspiration tears” from your favorite magazine, or other files. Here are some of my favorites.

These Horchow Desk Accessories can be used to hold keys and other small items that we tend to throw around our home.

Horchow Desk Accessories

I also love these Mariposa Desk Trays from Horchow to hold your keys.

Horchow Desk Trays

Place mail in this cute box instead of cluttering surfaces in your house. When it’s full and the lid doesn’t close, you’ll know its time to purge.

Mail Box

Finally, many of us are now addicted to Pinterest ~ raises hand. I love using it to create personal inspiration boards to capture styles I love, as well as interior design and entertaining ideas. But as a lover of magazines, I also see styles, products and ideas of interest among the glossy pages. I love tearing out pictures of a lipstick I want purchase, a tote I’m coveting, or a chaise I want to price. Yes, I type these things into the notes section of my iPad or iPhone, but I need the picture. Saving pcitures can cuase clutter, were it not for these stylish file folders. Check your local papier for style selections.

Leopard File Folders

Once you’ve organized your files. Consider storing them in a stylish file box.

Next week, I’ll post on some very non-traditional organizing tips. If you have questions about organizing in your home, or office, feel free to email me at 1prettydomestic@gmail.com. Happy organizing!

What to Get???

Sometimes the best laid plans get away from the most organized of us. We knew Mother’s Day was right around the corner, but somehow believed we had more time to shop and prepare than we actually did. So here we are, three days away from Mother’s Day sans gift.

Here’s a quick list I put together of great gifts for your Mother that can be purchased in store or online. Granted you may have to pay a little extra for shipping so close to the holiday, but isn’t Mother worth it? (Disclaimer: These gifts reflect my taste and that of my Mother, but I bet yours will enjoy them just the same.)

David Yurman Perfume & Body Lotion. I started wearing David Yurman several months ago, and while my Mother tends to wear the same fragrance, she loved the smell. Nordstrom will wrap your gift and enclose a personalized note for $5.00. They also offer free shipping, but at this late date, unless you don’t care about your gift arriving post-holiday, you may want to spend the extra money for rush shipping. However, if you live in the same city as your Mother, drop into Nordstrom and pick up this great fragrance gift.

David Yurman Perfume
Ralph Lauren Cable Knit Throw. My Mother travels a great deal, but there’s always the headache of packing for warmer climates, versus the cold of the airport and plane. This throw is a fabulous gift for any Mother on the go. She can also use it to throw over her favorite reading chaise. If you order by 5:00 p.m. today EDT, Amazon guarantees delivery by tomorrow, May 11th. Here are the details.

Ralph Lauren Throw

Bvlgari Bath Soap. Whether working in the home, out of the home, or a busy retiree, what better way to help your Mother relax than with luxurious soaps to accompany her bath? Again, at Nordstrom.

Bvlgari Bath Soaps

Tory Burch Nylon Ella Tote. What Mother doesn’t like a new handbag? From her readers to her favorite novel, or if your Mom has gone techie ~ her Kindle Fire or iPad 2 ~ this bag is the perfect classic, yet trendy tote to hold all of her must-haves.

Henri Bendel iPad2 Case or iPhone 4 Case. Speaking of which, has your Mother gone techie? Henri Bendel makes these very cute and whimsical iPad and iPhone cases.Henri Bendel iPad Case

These are just a few last-minute ideas for Mother’s Day. They are material items; but for most Mothers the gift of our love and time is more than enough. Happy Mother’s Day!

Pretty Face: Hello Gorgeous!

I am addicted to beauty products ~ makeup, skin care products, nail polish, hair treatments, body creams, fragrances ~ you name it, I’m always in search of something new. In preparation for my spring and summer “look,” my latest purchases are these absolutely adorably packaged eye shadow collections from Two Faced Cosmetics. [HINT: They are also available at Sephora if you wish to use your Beauty Insider Reward Points.]

Cat Eyes

I’ve also started experimenting with the cat eye. I love the vintage ‘60s look! But a little note of warning; if you are moved to attempt the cat eye, start early, lest you’ll surely be late to your event, office, etc. It takes time and practice to get it just right

Anyway, no matter the time of year you’ll see a reoccurring theme with me around my makeup ~ one, I’m very monochromatic, and two, whatever I purchase is usually in the brown or neutral family.

Now I recognize that not everyone has the same aesthetic sense as I. Nor is everyone attracted to the same color palettes or style of makeup. So I decided to sit down with my longtime friend, sorority sister and certified makeup artist, Karen Nikki, for a “Q & A” on what spring and summer makeup trends she’s seeing. Check out our conversation.

Karen Nikki

Karen Nikki with a flawless spring face!

Q. How long have you been interested in make-up? A. I’ve had a love affair with makeup ever since I was 17 or 18 years old! I even had my makeup professionally done for my senior portraits.

Q. Do you have any formal training in makeup artistry? A. I attended the Von Lee International School of Aesthetics in 2008, where I became a certified makeup artist. However, most of my training came from my time as an artist with MAC Cosmetics.

Q. How long were you with MAC Cosmetics? Have you worked for any other cosmetic companies? A. I signed on with MAC as a Freelancer in December 2008 and resigned as a permanent artist in June 2010. MAC is the only cosmetics company I’ve worked for. Working for MAC was an amazing experience, but working EVERY weekend began to take a toll on me. I was also beginning to lose my love for the art of makeup because it started feeling like a job. As a freelance artist, I pick my own jobs, my own hours and most importantly, makeup is fun again!

Q. On to what’s hot for spring and summer. I’m seeing a lot of pastels and neon colors, particularly oranges, in makeup palettes this season. Are those the “go to” colors for nails and makeup this season? What else are you seeing? A. Absolutely! Fashion directly influences the season’s makeup trends. Color blocking and neons are hot right now! It gets me so excited to see women (especially women of color) wearing bold, bright hues of color! Coral cheeks and lips are very on trend at the moment. While the classic red lip is trendy, yet timeless, embracing orangey reds will be hot for the summer. My favorite is MAC’s Lady Danger.

Bronzer has become the new blush! My fave bronzer is by Covergirl Queen by Queen Latifah. It comes in 3 shades and can be found in your local drug store. Metallic eye shadows have also made their way to the forefront of makeup for the upcoming seasons.

Q. What’s the one secret for keeping makeup looking dewy and fresh, and not heavy and caked during the warmer months? A. For many women, there is a very fine line between dewy and oily. I’ve never been a fan of adding powder when the skin gets too oily because this can make the face look very cakey. Rather, I prefer to remove the oil by using blot paper. This removes the excess oil without disturbing the makeup. You can also separate a 2~ply tissue into 2 thin sheets and use one to soak up any extra oil.

Q. What are the one or two items every doll on the go must have in her bag to look her best this spring and summer? And how do we take it from day to evening? A. I always find this question kind of difficult to answer because a woman’s makeup bag reflects the features she likes to accentuate. If you’re a person who loves to feature your lips, I would say, a good lip conditioner and lip gloss/lipstick are essentials. If you like to play up your eyes, liner and mascara are must haves! Some women prefer to stay pretty “clean~faced” and show off their beautiful skin. If this is you, keeping a nice tinted moisturizer and bronzer on hand are key. Transforming makeup from day to night can be as simple as adding a dark liner to the inner rim of the eye or switching that natural colored lip gloss to a bold color.

Q. And for our more natural dolls, who are in to little or no makeup, what are the musts for beautiful skin? A. Beautiful skin starts from the inside out, so water intake and a healthy diet are essential! Again, tinted moisturizer is my top recommendation for the woman who needs very little coverage, yet wants a finished, even complexion. Laura Mercier makes an excellent tinted moisturizer. To add a little color to the face, cheeks stains are great. A cheek stain is just a cream blush, but these are awesome because they can almost always be used on the lips as well. Two for the price of one! Can’t beat that!

Thanks Karen Nikki!

You Are Cordially Invited to Champagne Sunday!

Champagne Cocktail

Classic Champagne Cocktail

In my home, like many others, time is a commodity. Many weeks, work, volunteer responsibilities, and family commitments, keep me and my SO from carving our quality time. To use a cliche, “we’re like passing ships in the night.

Last year, a girlfriend visited and gifted a bottle of champagne. The bottle remained unopened for quite a while. One rare Sunday, with nothing on the calendar, we decided to uncork the bottle of bubbly. We sat on the couch, sipped champagne and chatted for a couple of hours. It was the perfect way to spend some quality time. Later on that week we reminisced how much fun we had and committed to making “Champagne Sundays” a tradition.

“Champagne Sunday” doesn’t always mean a bottle of champagne. Sometimes we opt for a Prosecco or Cava Spanish Sparkling Wine. There are also numerous champagne recipes to try. Here’s a favorite:

The Ingredients |

  • 3 drops Bitters
  • 1 sugar cube
  • 1 ounce Cognac
  • 4 ounces chilled Champagne

The Mixology |Drop bitters onto sugar cube; let soak in. Place sugar cube in a Champagne flute. Add Cognac, and top with Champagne and serve. This recipe can be easily multiplied. Serve, sip + enjoy!

I cordially invite you to join us for “Champagne Sundays.” Check back next week for a new “Champagne Sunday” recipe! Serve, sip + enjoy!

What Does a Girl Look Like Who Can’t Cook or Clean?

Several years ago, I attended a much-anticipated reunion of college girlfriends. As I assisted in the kitchen, one of the women in attendance looked at me and said “What are you doing in here? You don’t look like you can cook or clean.” Without going into detail, we proceeded to engage in a very spirited discussion about what she meant by her question and comment. She called it “pretty girl syndrome,” meaning in her mind pretty girls don’t know how to cook or clean. Mind you, “pretty girl” were her words, not mine; and that’s not what this post is about. In the end my retort was, “Actually, I’m pretty domestic!”

Her comment has stuck with me, and since that time I’ve often wondered, “What does a girl look like who can’t cook or clean?” I think that this is a very unfortunate stereotype. Women of different ethnicities, shapes, education levels, and socio-economic backgrounds are equipped with an equally diverse set of domestic skills. Anyway, I digress.

As I’ve grown, I’ve learned that I love all things domestic ~ cooking, cleaning, organizing, decorating, and entertaining. Yes in fact, I am “pretty domestic.” While I have a career I love, that keeps me extremely busy, it doesn’t afford an opportunity for creativity. And wanting to try my hand at blogging, I figured why not merge the two.

Update | This blog has evolved since its first launch in 2012. My musings tend to end themselves towards luxury, lifestyle, fashion and beauty, with epicurious pleasures sprinkled throughout. I hope you’ll enjoy your time here. So, if this is your first time …

Welcome to “The Pretty Domestic!” If you are a longtime “friend of the pretty,” welcome back!

Until Then,
