Several years ago, I attended a much-anticipated reunion of college girlfriends. As I assisted in the kitchen, one of the women in attendance looked at me and said “What are you doing in here? You don’t look like you can cook or clean.” Without going into detail, we proceeded to engage in a very spirited discussion about what she meant by her question and comment. She called it “pretty girl syndrome,” meaning in her mind pretty girls don’t know how to cook or clean. Mind you, “pretty girl” were her words, not mine; and that’s not what this post is about. In the end my retort was, “Actually, I’m pretty domestic!”
Her comment has stuck with me, and since that time I’ve often wondered, “What does a girl look like who can’t cook or clean?” I think that this is a very unfortunate stereotype. Women of different ethnicities, shapes, education levels, and socio-economic backgrounds are equipped with an equally diverse set of domestic skills. Anyway, I digress.
As I’ve grown, I’ve learned that I love all things domestic ~ cooking, cleaning, organizing, decorating, and entertaining. Yes in fact, I am “pretty domestic.” While I have a career I love, that keeps me extremely busy, it doesn’t afford an opportunity for creativity. And wanting to try my hand at blogging, I figured why not merge the two.
Update | This blog has evolved since its first launch in 2012. My musings tend to end themselves towards luxury, lifestyle, fashion and beauty, with epicurious pleasures sprinkled throughout. I hope you’ll enjoy your time here. So, if this is your first time …
Welcome to “The Pretty Domestic!” If you are a longtime “friend of the pretty,” welcome back!
The Pretty Domestic
This a great idea! I’ve always shocked people when they find out that I like to look good and cook and make home look good also!
I love your BLOG!!! This is so creative. Looking forward to reading future blogs.
Pretty domestics unite. I cant tell you how many people have told me. You dont look like you can cook. I thought it must b a northern thing, but Ive heard this in various regions. I can cook, clean, swing a hammer and rock some stilettos. Do your thing L2
Love it! Can’t wait to share ideas.
I loved reading your 1st blog article. Very relevant, interesting, and entertaining.
I’m getting “Prettty” inspired (to use your topic heading) to also write a blog.
I’m also very excited to read more see…
Pretty girls rock:)
Being a modern G.R.I.T.S, I heart all things domestic. Kudos on shedding light on all things #pretty-domestic. Love Ya!!!
Wow, I am so excited for you- Lynn. I love the look, right away…I wanted to read more. First impressions are key. I am most intrigued by the subject matter too-“pretty domestic”—NICE! Can’t wait for the next– narrative, if you will. Hugs and kisses! All the best! Soror Donna Rae
What a great idea. I know you’ll have fun with this AND give us all a good serving of food for thought!
Love it Link Lynn … Cheers to you and all the “Pretty Domestic Ladies”.
‘You can’t judge a book by it’s cover’ is the quote that comes to mind. Number, this is the beginning of something great. I love it so far. Keep blooging!
Great idea. Soror, you are “Pretty Amazing”.
Love the blog
Congrats on ur new adventure. I will be following with excitement.
I loved reading this, and I agree with what Michele said. I am looking forward to seeing what’s to come!
The ability to successfully multitask with style and grace is a talent of an evolved woman. Thank you for taking on the challenge of explaining this gift.
Finally had a chance to read your blog. I love it! We have so many similarities (except writing). Keep up the good work, and I will definitely continue to indulge.
“Pretty” cool Mel!!! You know I don’t get on any “social” sites much but for you I will and will try to check back periodically!! Perhaps people will think about what they say out their mouths. However, if the person did not say what they said to you then this great idea would not have come to life!!! Cynnie
LOVE this, Lynn! Although, I think that I have the opposite problem. Based on my “look,” men tend to think that I am “pretty domestic,” with much more emphasis on the “domestic.” So, they are really surprised that I would like to go out, as much as I like to entertain. *side eye* Looking forward to more….. 🙂
