eyelash
Well actually I don’t; but am considering doing so. What am I talking about? Eyelash extensions. Lately, I’ve observed my Dolls, friends and fashionistas on the street donning and batting fabulously long and full lashes. Their secret? Eyelash extensions. I know I’m late to the game. But, I’ve yet to commit, because I have questions. How are they applied? Will they irritate my eyes? What happens when I rub my eyes? How do I remove my eye makeup? What happens when one (or two) fall out? Are they high-maintenance? How often do I need them touched up? And on, and on, and on. With so many questions, I decide to do a little research into “said” extensions. (Shout out to CA!) Peep what I learned during a consultation at the Four Seasons Spa Baltimore.

Q. What are eyelash extensions? Lash extensions are natural looking mink, silk or synthetic eyelashes applied one-by-one to each individual natural lash. They are designed to provide the thickness and length that you may have not naturally inherited.

Q.  Can I select the length and fullness of the lash extension? Yep. Lash extensions come in any length, color, thickness and curvature you can imagine.

Q. How are lash extensions applied? The extensions are applied with a waterproof, semi-permanent glue designed not to irritate your eye or natural lashes.

Q. How long do they take to apply? It is my understanding that applying a full set can take anywhere from 2 – 3 hours.

Q. How should eye makeup be removed? Eye makeup should be removed with a gentle eye makeup remover; being uber careful not to touch the lashes. You should also take great care not to get cotton fibers “stuck” in the lashes.

Q. How much does it cost to have eye lash extensions applied? Anywhere from $125.00 – $400.00 depending on your choice of lash. Be skeptical of $20.00 lash applications. You get what you pay for.

Q. What can be done to make the lashes last longer? If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it twice – sleep on your back? No seriously, sleep on your back. Again, be gentle when removing eye makeup. Resist the urge to touch, pull or play with them. Remember to keep your touch-up appointments, as directed by your lash stylist. And finally, do not try to remove the extensions on your own.

Q. How often should they be reapplied? Most stylists recommend once every four weeks.

Check out this article from Harper’s Bazaar – What’s it Like to Have Eyelash Extensions. You won’t be able to stop laughing.

There you have it! Eyelash extensions 101. Armed with this information, I may just schedule an appointment and give ’em a try. I mean a Doll loves to accentuate the eyes!

In the interim, its me and my mascara.I want to share with you two of my favs; both as samples. Now they are constants in my rotation.

tarte-logo

This mascara is absolutely amazing. I am more concerned with lengthening my lashes, than fullness. This lengthens beyond measure. But, for those Dolls interested in fullness, you also get that benefit. The secret? Amazonian Clay. This natural wonder’s properties have been known to restore hydration, as well as enrich color pigments, creating a volume-boosting formula with higher intensity and truer color.

chanel-logo

I love this mascara primer. As soon as it’s applied, you immediately see your lashes lengthening. It also works to hydrate and strengthen your lashes. Chanel suggests wearing  it at night as a lash mask.

I confess to being leery of trying this at first. No shade, but I tried a similar dual wand mascara – primer on one end and mascara on the other. Once the primer was on, it never wanted to come off. I was literally pulling it off of my lashes while showering. Needless to say, my lashes were being stressed and coming out. But, not the Chanel primer. It comes off easily with an eye make up remover.

More to adore from Chanel …

The perfect companion to the Nourishing Mascara Base is Le Volume de Chanel Mascara. I am using it in No. 10 – Noir, and have nothing but rave reviews. It’s easy to apply, lengthens, doesn’t clump, and removes easily. I have been picking up the Tarte less and less these days.

What’s your favorite mascara? Do you lash? I’ll be back soon with an update on my extension experience!

Feeling Gray!

Hey Dolls! No, I’m not feeling down. It was simply too easy to title this post “50 Shades of Gray.” Any who, when the seasons change, my fall-back color (no pun intended) is black, with the ever-present perfect shade of Chanel Red Lipstick. I rock black with red lips straight through to Spring. But a funny thing happened this year when I began paying attention to  my cool weather wardrobe. My black is being overtaken by gray – gray pants, gray turtlenecks, gray jackets, gray, you name it. I even find myself attracted to gray on the racks in the boutiques and stores I shop. And, although I have been a creature of habit, I welcome the change to gray.

So what’s new in gray? Here are my fav’s in gray for the season.

smith-cultpp_w300_h152

You have to love this shade, described as an “opaque cement.” Not to mention that the packaging is to die for! (And yep, they call it “nailed” lacquer!)

katvondlogo

Smoke is the newest edition to the Shade + Light Eye Contour Quad Collection. Touted as “color contouring,” these cool matte grays, coupled with a touch of deep taupe, are perfect for a crisp fall evening.

smashbox_logo_logotype_wordmark-700x156

I know, I know! I am taking you out of your comfort zone with this uber-edgy look. But, I promise, it is so chic against the matte eye look above from the Kat Von D Smoke Quad. I purchased, wore it, and have yet to be kicked out of our home by my Mr.

Feeling unsure about all of this darkness? My gift to you – a makeup tutorial by my favorite YouTube beauty blogger, The Fancy Face. No one does it better than Miss Tina. Peep her tutorial below to get the deets on how to rock this look. And be sure to subscribe to  her YouTube Channel! You’ll love her!

Now, what to wear? My go-to staple for the colder weather, a cashmere turtleneck. I am loving this simple deep gray t-neck. Pair it with casual leggings, skinny jeans, or leather leggings with a haute stiletto.

You cannot go wrong with this outerwear number from J. Crew. Truly a show-stopper, the pièce de résistance with any casual outfit!

j-crew-logo

Why not give both of these pieces a little pizzaz with beaded tassel earrings. Also from J. Crew, these beauties are so pretty in “misty fog,” dangling for a sparkly rhinestone!

Finally, we know a Doll can’t go far without a mean shoe, or in this case, boot game. Check out these charcoal thigh highs from Stuart Weitzman. These numbers illicit a full-on swoon!

You see why my mood is gray?! Won’t you join me!

The Beauty Experiment

My guilty pleasure is beauty products – skin + body care, make-up, fragrances, nail polish – I’m in! My recent obsession has been on creating the perfect skin care routine. Ok not recent, this has been an ongoing quest. My skin is not bad, but could be better – hyper-pigmentation be damned! I’ve tried all types of creams, potions and lotions, everything from Prescriptives to La Prarie. On a recent jaunt to Sephora, for an angled eyeliner brush, I spied an end-cap of face and eye masks, something for every skin malady. My choice, the Perfecting & Brightening Pearl Mask in the pretty pink packaging. You should know that I am also drawn to packaging, the more minimal the better. A lot of products come home with me because of the packaging, but I digress.

Sephora Pearl Mask_052815

It was a week or so before I made time to try the mask. Honestly, I was somewhat leery, but let me say, I had a change of heart. Wednesday was a free night, perfect for a “pretty party.” I carefully read and followed the directions. Unfold the mask – check; apply the mask to a clean and dry face – check; and after 15 minutes remove the mask and gently massage, allowing the product to penetrate the skin, no need to rinse – check.

My first concern was that the mask would be flimsy, meaning that it would tear while trying to remove from the packaging; but nope, it’s made of fiber, no tears. It was also easy to apply, and covered the entire surface of my face with a little extra mask for under my chin. I have to say that I looked like The Mummy, but that’s the price of beauty. You can find a pic on Sephora’s Beauty Board, I don’t want to scare you away.

But what I loved that most is that you could “feel” the ingredients working – natural origin white pearl, which is said to even out skin tone, and broccoli extract for clarifying. Personally, I like to feel a little tingle in my products. There was also a cooling/soothing sensation. Once I removed the mask there was product left on my face which, following the directions, I massaged into my skin. I immediately looked in the mirror and my skin looked healthier and brighter (glowing) – pores significantly smaller. Now I’m no fool and know that bathroom lighting is not true lighting. But since it was not yet dark on the East Coast, I took my hand mirror outside on the deck to take a look, still pleased.

The very next morning I awoke and went to the mirror to see if I was still pleased with the results, and yep. Is my skin cured of its ails? Of course not. But, 48 hours in am I still pleased? Yes. I will certainly add this to my weekly skin care routine. And by the way, the price point is $6.00. Yesterday, did a supermarket sweep through Sephora and picked up the companion Perfecting & Brightening Eye Mask. I will post a follow up review on the eye mask in the next week or so.

This is only one of several face masks available at Sephora. Peep the selection here – Sephora Face Masks.

Do you mask? If so, leave a comment and share your experience.

The Must-Haves: Mischo Beauty Nail Lacquer

must-have \ˈməst-ˌhav\n

1. an essential possession: the Mischo Beauty “Brave is Beautiful Collection” is the must-have fall nail lacquer

adj

2. essential: a must-have luxe nail lacquer

Hi Dolls! You know I love beauty products and when I find a good one, I’m loyal. If you recall, last November I introduced you to Mischo Beauty, a luxe nail lacquer, after attending the DC launch of the line – Pretty New ~ Mischo Beauty Luxury Nail Lacquer. The inaugural line, Fashion Week, was so fab with colors aptly named The Tents, Front Row, Invite Only, and #NYFW that I wanted to check back in almost a year later to see what’s new in nails.

Fashion WeekI reached out to beauty brainchild, Kitiya Mischo King, who graciously agreed to give us a peek into what going on with Mischo Beauty and fall nail trends. Peep the deets below.

mbPD. Last time we saw you was in November at the Washington, DC launch of Mischo Beauty. Tell us what’s been going on with your line since then?

K. We’ve been working tirelessly to grow the brand!  We are now available at The Emerald Door (www.emeralddoorsalon.com) in Silver Spring, MD – which is our first retail account.  We’ve also launched two new collections – “The Icons Collection” for Spring 2014 and “The Brave is Beautiful Collection” for Fall 2014.

PD. If I recall, Mischo Beauty Nail Lacquer is “5 Free.” Remind us what that means and why it’s important?

K. The term “5 FREE” means that the nail lacquer formulation does not contain the following toxins: formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, DBP, toluene or camphor.  These toxins can cause some ugly side effects such as nausea, light-headedness, headaches, and more. They’ve even been linked to cancer and birth defects.

PD. Let’s get to what’s important. What’s on trend for nails this fall? Colors, shapes, lengths? Is the long pointy nail still in?

K. Our favorite trends for Fall 2014 include winter pastels, tonol dressing (from head to toe), metallics and knits in every variation (dresses, jumpsuits, jackets, pants, etc) and the new Fall 2014 collection pairs well with them all! As far as nail shape and length are concerned – yes, we’re definitely still seeing the “stiletto” nail!

PD. What about a couple of tips for maintaining healthy nails.

K. Our absolute favorite tip is the fact that a healthy body results in healthy nails!  It’s important to make sure you’re exercising, maintaining a balanced diet full of green vegetables, drinking a minimum of 8 glasses of water daily, taking a multivitamin and getting adequate sleep!

PD. I know that all of the Mischo Beauty Nail Lacquer colors are your babies. But do you have a favorite? What are you featuring in your line for the fall?

K. Honestly, I love them all!  The Fall 2014 “The Brave is Beautiful Collection” includes four new, daring, 5-free shades which are a tribute to the bold choices of women who curate fabulous lives in the face of challenge.  Determination never looked so good.

PD. Will you be expanding Mischo Beauty to other beauty products in the future?

K. Yes! We are working on launching a full collection of color cosmetics to be released in the very near future.  Please stay tuned!

Thanks Kitiya! We sure will! We look forward to chatting with you again soon!Brave is Beautiful

The Hiatus is Over! 50 Shades of Red … The Recap

Hey Dolls!

You thought I forgot, didn’t you? Of course not; but I did take a much needed summer detour. The hiatus is over, so let me give you a quick recap of 50 Shades of Red, Vols. I – VI.

The Recap_v3

50 Shades of Red … Vol. I

The Shade: Rouge Coco Shine “Dialogue,” with Framboise Precision Lip Definer, and Levres Scintillantes Glossimer 04, all compliments of Chanel. I could never fully commit to the color ~ just too much pink/magenta undertone. I would probably rock the gloss sans lipstick. red lips isolated in whitered lips isolated in whitered lips isolated in white

50 Shades of Red … Vol. II

The Shade: L’Oreal Infallible Le Rouge Lipstick in “Target” Red ~ ironically a quick purchase from said Target ~ with a MAC Lip Pencil in Brick. “Target Red” is the perfect shade of red, and lasts “foreva.” It has somewhat of a matte finish, which I love, but my lips still retained their moisture. red lips isolated in whitered lips isolated in whitered lips isolated in whitered lips isolated in whitered lips isolated in white

50 Shades of Red … Vol. III

The Shade: MAC DIVA, with its complimentary Currant Lip Pencil. Very severe. In the tube, it was a beautifully rich, deep burgundy, but it played really harsh on me; needed frequent reapplication, and the liner was a bit too dark. red lips isolated in whitered lips isolated in white

50 Shades of Red … Vol. IV

The Shade: Gloss Mirior ~ Extreme by Sephora in Femme Fatale. I’m not a gloss girl, but I love everything about Gloss Mirior ~ Extreme by Sephora in Femme Fatale. This little number is a top contender for my fav red lipstick.red lips isolated in white red lips isolated in whitered lips isolated in whitered lips isolated in whitered lips isolated in white

50 Shades of Red … Vol. V

The Shade: ZuZu Luxe Vino de Amor Lipstick. There’s nothing about Vino de Amor Lipstick I don’t like. The color – check; long wearing and moist – check, check; the ability to wear it without lip liner (something I rarely do) check, check, check! red lips isolated in whitered lips isolated in whitered lips isolated in whitered lips isolated in white

50 Shades of Red … Vol. VI

The Shade: Rimmel Lasting Finish Matte Lipstick by Kate Moss. Tried to like it, but didn’t. It was extremely transparent and required a lot of reapplication. It also felt very gritty. Nope! red lips isolated in white

Le Confession
I traveled to La Posoda Resort & Spa mid-May disappointed by my experience with my Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick a la Ms. Moss, yet still committed to following through with 50 Shades of Red … Vol. VII. The highlight of my trip was going to be spending time with friends, as well as my Mother and Aunt Mary Kay, both of whom are of the world of Grande Dolls. These women are always dolled up. It doesn’t matter where they are going – ensemble, hair and makeup are always just right! As we shopped, ate, and chatted, Aunt Mary Kay pulled out a tube of the prettiest pink lipstick. It was gorgeous and matched her perfectly glowing tan complexion. I had to have it. GASP! But, what to do, what to do? Could I abandon 50 Shades and the disappointment from Ms. Moss, make myself happy and ask Aunt Mary Kay the details of this beauty? You know where I’m going, I did the latter, and for the past several months have been wearing Make Me Pink Lipstick 135 by Maybelline. You heard me right, Maybelline! (Clutch the pearls!) I’ve never received so many complements. I love the color, texture, it’s moisturizing, long-lasting and looks good with a tan. On a scale of 0 to 5, I give it 5 pink lips! Pink LipsPink LipsPink LipsPink LipsPink Lips

But a commitment is a commitment. Here’s where we are. Make Me Pink Lipstick is being retired today! After all, Summer is almost gone and we can now return to our regularly scheduled program with the Bobbi Brown Red Alert Edition of 50 Shades of Red … Vol. VII. Yep, I’m trying all four!

Perfume Perfection

A while ago, one of favorite Dolls, Dr. Rachel, asked me to post on some of my favorite fragrances. It’s been on my “blog log” for a while now, but I simply hadn’t gotten to it. However, a series of recent compliments on a particular fragrance led me to get to it. Peep the deets.

5f95479e8ff7b0f6ddf460a87ad67759

Jo Malone Lime, Basil and Mandarin Cologne

701-10020-PROD01111_LIMEBASILMANDARIN_MJo Malone Lime, Basil and Mandarin Cologne entered my life when a Doll gifted me a cute little goodie bag full of samples. The Jo Malone was one of the last I sampled, and it was love at first, well … smell. I am typically drawn to citrus scents during the warmer months, so I knew JM would be in my Spring/Summer rotation.  The Notes: Top notes are lime, mandarin orange and bergamot; middle notes are basil, lilac, iris and thyme; base notes are patchouli and vetiver.

Dipytque 34 Boulevard Saint Germain Solid Perfume

231765533

I’m not exactly sure how I became aware of Diptyque 34 Boulevard Saint Germain Solid Perfume, but it is the fragrance that, when I wear it, grabs the most attention. The name originates from the street of the first Diptyque boutique. I am probably drawn to 34 Boulevard Saint Germain because of the currant notes. J’adore red and black currant. What even better is that it’s a solid perfume, making it perfect for travel and those pesky TSA stops. The Notes: Top notes: blackcurrant, green leaves, fir leaf, citruses, pink pepper, cardamom, cloves and cinnamon. Heart: rose, geranium, tuberose, iris and violet. Base: woods, resins, balsams and eucalyptus.

David Yurman Eau de Parfum

 David-Yurman-Eau-de-Parfum-2-5_790BB5B1

While hard to find, this really is one of my favorites. I would say that its my daily ”go to” fragrance. Not too heavy or light, David Yurman Eau de Parfum can be worn all year long.  I love that the sculpted gold cap is reminiscent of the Yurman Cable Collection of jewelry; and the bottle neck is created in a form of Yurman’s wedding band. The Notes: Wafts of mandarin, and fresh green notes of black currant leaf and petals, followed by floral notes of peony, water lily, rose otto, patchouli, exotic woods and musk.

Tom Ford Black Orchid

T0-BLACK-ORCHID_OC_50ML_A

I always reach for Black Orchid for date night with my Mr. It’s simply sexy. But would you expect anything less from Mr. Ford. I wouldn’t necessarily consider it a heavy fragrance; but other than date night, I tend to wear this during the day in the cooler months. The Notes: The top notes are French jasmine, black truffle, ylang-ylang, black currant and effervescent citrus. In the floral-spicy heart, dwells the Tom Ford’s black orchid, imaginary more than real, and the base combines woodsy notes (patchouli and sandalwood), dark chocolate, incense, amber, vetiver, vanilla and balsam.
