What’s Making Me Swoon!

Hey Dolls! The summer heat is “doing the most” and the fragrances I wear during cooler months are simply too heavy for this time of year. Enter, the search. I mentioned in an earlier post that I’m attracted to packaging. Clean and minimal normally grabs me. I was in Sephora on several occasions, the last to pick up the a travel size fragrance; but wasn’t sure what I wanted. As I browsed, I spied the Maison Margiela ‘REPLICA’ fragrance collection. Of course the packaging drew me in – simple bottle, clean, minimal, black and white labeling. I’d been meaning to try several of the ‘REPLICA’ scents; but hadn’t made time.

What to choose? Beach Walk, Jazz Club, Lazy Sunday Morning, By the Fireplace? Don’t you love all of the names? I opted to try Lazy Sunday Morning and Beach Walk.

Lazy Sunday Morning is a floral fragrance combining notes of Aldehydes, Pear, Lily of the Valley, Iris, Rose Absolue, Orange Flower, White Musk, Indian Patchouli Oil, Ambrette Seeds Absolute. While a beautiful scent, as the label suggests, it reminded of the linen spray I use on freshly laundered sheets.

img_0372-2

Up next, Beach Walk. Combining notes of Bergamot, Pink Pepper, Lemon, Ylang Ylang, Coconut Milk, Heliotrope, Musk, Cedarwood, Benzoin, the scent is truly a mid-afternoon stroll along the beach. Jackpot! I should have known this Miami-born Doll would be in love the any fragrance named Beach Walk.

I purchased both a travel/purse, as well as full-size bottle.

Why ‘REPLICA?”

Each fragrance is said “tell a story with every spritz,” evoking a memory of a special place and time, allowing you to “relive the magic.”

A little about the bottle …

“The silhouette of each ‘REPLICA’ bottle is inspired by classic apothecary jars, allowing the collection to be instantly identifiable. Each bottle carries a 100 percent cotton label, which is printed using black ink text and resembles the tags used on the clothing and accessories for the ‘REPLICA’ couture collection. The unique pumps are wrapped with a rope to symbolize the authentic reproduction of the original ‘REPLICA’ couture line.”

What’s me swoon? ‘REPLICA’ Beach Walk by Maison Margiela.

Because on Sundays, We Mask …

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Dolls know that I love beauty products. I can spend hours in Sephora. By the way, I just reached VIB Rouge status. (Those that know, know.) I also love trying the latest products based on beauty influencer recommendations. My latest beauty obsession? Sheet masks. I have a box full. One for every skincare need – acne, aging, brightening, blemishes, hydration, hyperpigmentation, and healing, I am particularly fond of the Korean masks.

I reserve Sunday evenings for masking. I am usually winding down from a whirlwind weekend and have the time to sit still. Although I have a wide selection of masks, I find myself repeatedly grabbing the Primary Raw Do You 2-Step Milk Peeling Kit.

The two-step kit uses an AHA Milkpeel oversized cotton swab and Soy Milk-infused microfiber sheet mask to combat dullness, uneven texture and skin tone, fine lines, wrinkles and large pores.

Step one involves swabbing the AHA Milkpeel solution in the first pouch all over your face, as evenly as possible. While it doesn’t appear so, there is more than enough solution to cover your entire face. Make sure you get the remaining product at the bottom of the pouch.

Step two, place the sheet mask over top of the solution. You should feel a little tingle, but it’s not at all uncomfortable. The  instructions suggest leaving on the mask for about 15 – 20 minutes. I tend to be aggressive and will lay down with it on for about an hour. (Disclaimer: Do what works for you).

The first time I used this mask I was hooked. I know it sounds cliche, but my skin was truly brighter, with a smoother texture. With consistent use, combined with my daily skincare routine, I’ve seen a great deal of improvement –  less hyperpigmentation and dullness.

While this is my go-to mask, I will be sharing others that I use over weeks. Why? Because on Sundays, we mask!

Do you mask? What are your favorites?

Until then, keep sharing the pretty!

Countdown to the Fourth

Hi Dolls! The 4th is four days away and I’m thinking cookouts, the beach, and evening fireworks. I’m not one to don holiday colors, with the exception of the 4th. I love to do a little Independence Day red, white and blue. Peep my picks below.

Red …

If you’ve been following this blog for any length of time, you know my obsession with red lipstick. I tend to reach for matte reds, but in warmer months, I like to do a gloss. My choice for the 4th, Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Gloss in Socialite.

White …

This crisp summer look was inspired by one of my uber stylish girlfriend’s, Shawna W. We were recently at luncheon and she had on a beautiful white linen maxi dress by Theory. The look screams the 4th and can carry me from day to evening.

For a more casual look, how cute would it be to pair this dress with monogrammed white Chuck Taylor’s!

Ok, I love a white manicure. Any of these are perfect for a Fourth of July manicure. I’d also add Opi Funny Bunny, a creamy white staple.

Blue …

Part of the day will surely be spent poolside or on the beach. This calls for the perfect pedi. Why not do your take on flag blue.

What’s Making Me Swoon!

Hey Dolls! I know I’m late to the game, but I have a new obsession – eyebrow stencils! I know, I know. Some of you Dolls are like, “Old news, we’ve moved on to Microblading.” Well, I’m not there yet; and in the meantime eyebrows stencils are making me swoon.

I have my eyebrows done at the Anastasia Brow Bar in Nordstrom. Jessica is amazing. The challenge is that I have naturally fine eyebrows that aren’t thick enough to do the high arch I love. You know the one where it looks like I am giving you the glare of death once I raise a brow. Said solution, Anastasia Eyebrow Stencils!

Inspired by the Golden Ratio, a mathematical ratio of 1.618 to 1, which offers the key to finding balance, symmetry, and beauty, Anastasia created a unique and breakthrough method of shaping brows – the Golden Ratio Technique.

In the world of high arches, her technique involves establishing three precise points (on the brow): one that lies on an imaginary line running vertically through the middle of the nostril; the High Point on the eyebrow arch, which can be found on a line connecting the tip of the nose to the center of the iris; and finally, the point that lies on a line running through the edge of the corresponding nostril through the outer edge of the eye. The High Point divides the eyebrow arch in precisely the Golden Ratio. (Yep, it’s that deep!)

Anastasia’s Eyebrow Stencils, foolproof guides based on the ratio, are made with an easy to use pliable plastic, and come in an arch for every occasion and mood. For my daily go-to, I select the mid-range medium arch. But for a dramatic look, I choose the high arch or I call it the Hannah Brofman brow.

Credit: Ben Rosser

Not sure what shape best fits your face, Anastasia recommends the following:

  • Petite Arch. Recommended for small facial features.
  • Slim High Arch.  Recommended for brows in training, growth challenged, thin or sparse brows.
  • Medium Arch. Recommended for brows with a softer arch that naturally creates less space between the bottom of the brow and the top of the eye.
  • High Arch. Recommended for brows with a higher arch that naturally creates more space between the bottom of the brow and the top of the eye.
  • Full Arch. Recommended for the fullest shape and larger facial features.

Feeling a bit bold, forget the recommendations and play with different shapes.

Check out Anastasia shape and define over-tweezers brows using the high-arch stencil.

To get you started, I suggest picking up the Brow Kit. It has all of the accoutrements you will need to create the perfect brow.

And remember, “eyebrows are sisters, not twins.” | Anastasia

I will post a pic on my Instagram page this week with the full on high-arch; but no judgement Dolls.

2017 Spring Makeup Trends

Dolls know that I love makeup and am completely obsessed with red lipstick. I love perusing the page of magazines, eyeing the latest trends in shadows, bronzers, highlighters, and of course lipsticks. On my last birthday I decided to treat myself to professional photo session, replete with markup artist. Enter Lydia with Eyemagination Imaging and Carla, with Carla Taylor Makeup. The day was truly magical! Peep the makeup artistry and the stunning photos provided by these two talented women!

I was so impressed with Carla’s makeup artistry, I asked her to spill the deets about makeup trends we can expect to see throughout the spring and into the summer. Dolls, meet Carla.

TPD. Tell me a little about your makeup journey. How did you get started as a makeup artist?

CTM. For as long as I can recall, I have always loved makeup! I got started as an artist by others seeing my makeup in college. From seeing me, they then asked me to do their makeup for sorority pageants, etc.

TPD. What are the makeup trends to watch for in during the spring and throughout the remainder of 2017.

CTM. Berry, Berry, Berry!! Berry lips are all the rage this season. In addition, soft, subtle foundation with minimal contouring.

Images: Carla Taylor

TPD. As you know, I’m obsessed with a bold red lip, but have been eye-spying the nude lip trending? Can I still do a red lip? What are the hot nudes?

CTM. Of course you can still wear your fabulous reds! Especially because it is aligned with the current makeup trend! However, somedays you may not have on an outfit that will compliment a red lip. In this case, reach for a nude shade. My absolute favorite is from NARS called Honolulu Honey. I generally do not finish lipsticks but with this shade, I had to use a cotton swab to scrape out what remained in the tube! The great thing about this nude is that it compliments most skin tones effortlessly!

TPD. A flawlessly made-up face mean nothing with well cared for skin? We all want that true, “I woke up like this” look. What are you best tips for stellar skincare, particularly in the winter months?

CTM. Winter months can be harsh on the skin. The key is to MOISTURIZE and stay hydrated!! My go to products are from Luminesce. I use their Youth Restoring Cleanser and their Daily Moisturizing Complex SPF30. The great thing about their products is they use stem cell technology to repair damage to the skin caused by weather, age, etc.

TPD. What are your holy grail products for a fabulous go-to, everyday look?

CTM. My holy grail products are Colour Pop’s Liquid Matte Lipstick in the shade Avenue, Kat Von D’s Lock-it Concealer Cream and last but not least, Becca’s Ultimate Coverage Foundation. These items bring a smile to the 5-minute flawless face they create on me when I need to rush out the door.

TPD. Fortunately, I have you on speed dial, but what should the Pretty Domestic Dolls look for when selecting a makeup artist? What should they expect in terms of service and price?

CTM. I always recommend viewing your prospective artists work first prior to booking them. If they have tons of selfies on their social media, but no pictures of faces they have made up – beware! Be sure that whomever you book will take the time to listen to your wants, as their client.  You should expect to have amazing customer service and clean brushes!

Every artist has different rates. The range you should expect to pay is $125- $250. Their are some cases where you’ll find artists less than $125 and more than $250, depending on who they service most, i.e., cosmetic counters or celebrity clientele.

TPD. Of course wedding season is right around the corner. Talk to the brides. Any advice for bridal makeup?

CTM. Brides, it is best to invest in a quality artist for your big day. You want to make sure that whomever you hire listens to your needs. Consultations should not be optional. Your consult is your interview with the artist to ensure they are the best fit for your big day.  I wouldn’t hire cousin Susie in hopes that you’ll be flawless unless she is skilled. You should be no ones test subject on your special day. 🙂

And a few tips:

  • Keep your makeup timeless, yet flawless.
  • There is no need to have your eyeshadow match your bouquet.
  • Lashes are important!

Winter Skincare + Skincare Essentials

Hey Dolls! I don’t know about you, but the weather on the “right coast” has been awful. Bitter cold one day, 70 degrees the next, torrential rain, ice, and all of a sudden the sun peeks out and smiles. The daily changes have wreaked havoc on my skin. I recently had a facial at the fabulous Four Seasons Spa, and the aesthetician shared that my normally oily skin was extremely dry; most likely attributable to the weather. I’m sure that I’m not to only Doll battling skin challenges this time of year. In an effort to get answers, I asked my dear friend, Dr. Yolanda Holmes, M.D., Board Certified Dermatologist and partner at Washington DC Dermatology, for expert advice on daily skincare, and how to protect our pretty faces during the winter months.  Peep the deeds below, get to know Dr. Holmes and read her advice on saving our skin.

Tell me about your decision to become a dermatologist. Of all the specialities, why this one? I became a dermatologist because in high school I developed vitiligo on my left ear. I went to see a dermatologist where I lived, but did not fully understand the condition. I attended to college at Howard University; and at Howard University Hospital there was a Vitiligo Center. I went for treatments once a week for about a year and my vitiligo was cured, and thankfully has not returned. This experience influenced my decision to pursue a career in dermatology.

What are the basic of good skincare, regardless of age? The very basics of good skincare are simple – cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection.

Does skincare change for women with more mature skin? Skin does change for women when they mature. The skin can typically become drier, and because of hormonal changes may suffer from acne breakouts. Aging skin loses its elasticity and is prone to lines and wrinkles.

Does skincare change for women of different ethnicities? Skincare is basically the same for all women. Women with dark skin rarely suffer from skin cancers, but the sun does age the skin. Darker skin is less prone to wrinkling but the sun can precipitate the development of dark spots.

Do some myth-busting for us. I’ve heard that women of color don’t need sunscreen. For once and for all, what’s the truth? Sunscreen is important for women of color. Skin cancer is very rare; however, I have seen a few cases. As we are evolve, I believe that we will become more alike, so it is important that we know the importance of sunscreen. The sun ages the skin and also induces the development of hyper pigmentation – dark spots.

Skincare doesn’t just apply to our face, what about our bodies; especially in this cold weather when we tend to get extremely dry? Daily moisturizing is important for our bodies, especially this time of year. The decrease in humidity in the air makes skin drier and prone to cracks and breaks in the skin. These openings in the skin are portals for infection. The skin also looks better if it is well moisturized. There are many really good skin care products at local drug stores, so cost should not be a factor.

What are your “go-to” holy grail products? What should every woman include in her skincare regimen? I believe that every woman should have a great moisturizer and sunscreen. Even if your skin is oily, it is important to use a moisturizer because oily skin will overcompensate with the production of more oil causing the skin to look shiny. I also encourage women beginning in their 30’s to start with an anti-aging product at bedtime. It is always easier to prevent then to correct. 😉

Finally, what about Retinoids, products like Retin A, to improve the skin’s appearance. They seem to be popular. Do they work? Retinoids are some to the best anti-aging products on the market. You can buy over the counter products with retinol or prescription products like Retin A. They work by improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They also even the tone of the skin.

Thanks Dr. Holmes! Next time let’s chat about the popularity of skin enhancements.

Bobbi Brown Leaving Namesake

Hey Dolls, I am about three weeks late, but just heard the news that Bobbi Brown is leaving her eponymous company. Moment of silence. I am absolutely saddened. I am a huge Bobbi fan – both skin care and makeup – not to mention her clean, sleek and globally-recognized black and white packaging. Dressed in her signature black, applying makeup with her ring finger, Bobbi also made wearing eyeglasses über fashionable.

According to a December 19th press release from parent company Estée Lauder, “After 25 incredible years with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Bobbi Brown is leaving the brand to explore the next phase of her extraordinary career.”

Given the news, I couldn’t let the day go by without sharing some of my Bobbi favs.

Me and Mariah …

Go back like … oh nevermind! Hey Dolls! I’m sure you’ve heard by now, but in case you missed, Mimi aka Mariah Carey has taken her talents to the makeup industry. Yep, just in time for the holidays, she’s teamed with MAC Cosmetics for a second holiday-themed collaboration.

The 2016 collection brings Mimi’s signature glam, featuring sexy nude tones sparkling like champagne and glimmering like diamonds! From eye shadow, to eyeliner, blush, bronzer and all-over body sparkle (my pick), silver and gold sparkle touch each piece of the collection. The Must Haves …

must-have \ˈməst-ˌhav\ -n
1. an essential possession: Jo Malone Lime Basil + Mandarin Bath Oil

Hey Dolls! Every once in a while I stumble upon a goodie that becomes a “must have” – meaning I cannot go without “said” goodie in my beauty regime. This week I stumbled upon my latest must have. Dolls know I love all that is Jo Malone and have tried many of the products in her line, with one exception, the bath oil. Thursday morning, I realized that I had several samples of the Lime Basil + Mandarin Bath Oil from a recent purchase and was moved to give it a try. I am so glad that I did. It’s absolutely EVERYTHING!

debbie-favoriet-jo-malone-lime-basil-mandarin-2_thumb_695x463

I’ve tried body and shower oils, that when applied, simply lay on your skin – absolutely no absorption, nor moisturization. Not Ms Malone. As I massaged it into my slightly damp skin, it absorbed nicely and the smell was to die for! The trick would be how moisturized would my super dry skin remain throughout the day. Ms. Malone wins again. Hours later my skin still felt soft, hydrated and fragrance had not left me.

Needless to say, I’ll be picking up the full size for myself, and possibly several as Christmas gifts for friends and family. Make sure to grab a bottle for yourself!

Until then, keep sharing the pretty,
